The militarization of space is a sad thing


There have been introduced many ideas about the use of magnetic accelerators or railguns in space. The targets of the railguns have been planned to be other satellites or even the enemy cities. The naval railguns, what are tested by the U.S, and at least Chinese navies are suitable for the spaceborne platforms. 


One of the ideas has been that the railguns have been installed in the higher altitude satellites, and if there would be some kind of conflicts those satellites will start to shoot satellites, which are lower trajectories. Those "conventional" railguns would be used also against high-flying aircraft or defense against low-altitude ASAT (Anti-satellite systems), what are bases the kinetic energy missiles like THAAD. 


The creation of the railguns and especially space-borne railguns are argued that they are only suitable weapons, which have enough short reaction time to destroy FOBS (Fractional Orbital Bombardment System) what means nuclear weapons, what are parked on the orbiter. The railgun can be very stealthy, and the magnetic track can be pulled in. The ammunition could send through that track by using a centrifugal sling, which allows them to have a very high rate of fire. Those systems can be used against all other satellites, and their primary targets would be the communication and low orbiting recon satellites.

"Rods of God" is one of the most horrifying things, that mankind has ever invented. The idea to shoot flechette or kinetic energy projectile from the orbiter is not the same than shoot the megaton-class nuclear warheads to some cities.


The kinetic energy ammunition can get an incredibly powerful punch from the iron bite, which makes it possible to share precise and high accurate destruction to enemy cities and other areas. The extremely high-speed ammunition allows destroying single houses and other things like ships. Sometimes there have been introduced the idea that the uranium-ammunition would shoot against the targets from the orbiter, and in this kind of case, the system can use the standard GAU-8 type structure, where the iron-core uranium ammunition will shoot through the magnetic accelerator. 


There are two types of railguns. The normal rifles or cannons where the ammunition would send by using the normal cartridges, and to the barrel of that kind of weapon is equipped with magnetic tracks, what are accelerating the shell. Original "Project Thor" was research to use the system, where the ammunition would launch by using an air rifle or pressure bottle. That thing would make the ammunition moving and then the acceleration would be given by the magnetic track. 


Another type of system is pure rail guns, where the ammunition would just pull in the magnet track, and then it would accelerate the ammunition to very high speed. The last one is easier to control at the orbital trajectory because the recoil of the system is minimum.
